DescriptionMolybdenum, also known as Mo, belongs to the class of inorganic compounds known as homogeneous transition metal compounds. These are inorganic compounds containing only metal atoms,with the largest atom being a transition metal atom. Molybdenum is possibly neutral. Molybdenum exists in all living organisms, ranging from bacteria to humans. Molybdenum prevents plasma proteins from binding to copper, and it also increases the amount of copper that is excreted in urine. Molybdenum dusts and fumes, which can be generated by mining or metalworking, can be toxic, especially if ingested (including dust trapped in the sinuses and later swallowed). High levels of molybdenum can interfere with the body's uptake of copper, producing copper deficiency. In humans, molybdenum is involved in caffeine metabolism. Molybdenum is a potentially toxic compound.
