Common Name | 3-Methylphenanthrene |
---|
Description | 3-Methylphenanthrene, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as phenanthrenes and derivatives. Phenanthrenes are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds containing a phenanthrene moiety, which is a tricyclic aromatic compound with three non-linearly fused benzene rings. The name 'phenanthrene' is a composite of phenyl and anthracene. In its pure form it appears as a colorless, crystal-like solid but can also look yellow. Phenanthrene is used to make dyes, plastics and pesticides, explosives and drugs. It has also been used to make bile acids, cholesterol and steroids. Phenanthrene is nearly insoluble in water but is soluble in most low polarity organic solvents such as toluene, carbon tetrachloride, ether, chloroform, acetic acid and benzene. Phenanthrene is a potentially toxic compound. It can be found in cigarette smoke and is a known irritant and it photosensitizes skin to light. PAH metabolism occurs in all tissues, usually by cytochrome P-450, specifically by its associated enzymes CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 (PMID: 14720319 ). These enzymes metabolize PAH's into their toxic intermediates. The metabolites of PAHs, such as phenols, quinones, and dihydrodiols, can all be conjugated to glucuronides and sulfate esters; the quinones also form glutathione conjugates. PAHs are generally considered as cancerogenic to varying degrees. 3-Methylphenanthrene is formed during the combustion of cannabis and is therefore a constituent of cannabis smoke ( Ref:DOI ). |
