Cannabis Compound Identification |

Common Name | alpha-Cannabispiranol |
---|
Description | Alpha-Cannabispiranol, also known as Cannabispirol, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as indanes. Indanes are compounds containing an indane moiety, which consists of a cyclopentane fused to a benzene ring. Alpha-Cannabispirol is also classified as a phenol. It is one of the spiroindane compounds found in the cannabis plant. Spiroindane compounds were first isolated and identified as cannabis constituents in 1976. Spiroindane compounds are indane compounds that include two rings which share a single atom (usually a carbon). The simplest example of this type of compound is Spiro[2.2]pentane. There are two known Cannabisranol isomers including alpha- and beta-cannabispiranol, which differ in the configuration of the hydroxy group on C-4'. The hydroxy group in beta-cannabispiranol faces 'up' and it faces 'down' in alpha-cannabispiranol. Alpha-cannabispiranol was first isolated and identified as a cannabis constituent in 1982 (J. Chem. Soc. Perkin Trans. 1982;1:1455–1466). When isolated, alpha-cannabispiranol crystallizes as colorless prisms, giving the appearance of a white powder (PMID: 18681481 ). It exhibits moderate anti-oxidant activities (PMID: 18681481 ; PMID: 18774146 ). Cannabispiranols also exhibit immunosuppressive effects in cell culture (PMID: 3329437 ). |
