Common Name | Citronellolformate |

Description | Citronellol formate, or Citronellyl formate, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as fatty alcohol esters. These are ester derivatives of a fatty alcohol. Most fatty alcohols in nature are found as waxes which are esters with fatty acids and fatty alcohols. They are produced by bacteria, plants and animals for purposes of buoyancy, as source of metabolic water and energy, biosonar lenses (marine mammals) and for thermal insulation in the form of waxes (in plants and insects). Citronellol formate is a very hydrophobic molecule, practically insoluble in water, and relatively neutral. Citronellyl formate is used a flavouring ingredient. It has also been identified in plants such as citrus and in the essential oils of geranium, mandarin, satsuma, kumquat and other species. Citronellol formate has also been detected as a volatile component in cannabis plant samples (PMID: 26657499 ). |
